By borrowing another railroads\ncaboose, Union Pacific found that bay-windows provided\nbetter train visibility, were safer, and more comfortable to ride\nin than a cupola. They placed an order for 100 cabooses\nwith International Car Company for a new class of caboose\nbeing delivered in 1979. Large protected end porches, 70-ton\nNational Swing Motion trucks, elevated toolboxes, oil-fired\nheat, and hydraulic coupler cushioning were some of the new\nfeatures that made these crew favorites.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA single CA-12 prototype was created with comfort and safety\nimprovements. However the order was cancelled as UP\ninherited recently-built Rock Island cabooses (CA-13). UP\nmodified the CA-11 fleet with many of these features creating\na sub-class of the CA-11.
